Empathy

Dimension 2: Critical

Evaluating OER against the Empathy criterion

Critical

OER are critically reviewed, issues are challenged and stereotypes are subverted.

The Equity Rubric for OER Evaluation gives a resource a high rating for Empathy if it “creates space for learners’ empathetic interactions and practices.”

The Rubric suggests looking for the “use of “I” statements to avoid blame; active listening to what learners are sharing; validating the feelings of others; setting aside personal reactions to allow for the reactions of others.”

Key Examples and Suggestions

Author Statement of Positionality in Enhancing Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility (IDEA) in OER

Nikki Andersen

The Statement of Positionality from the author of this text demonstrates a critical reflection of their own lived experiences and the lens through which they view the concepts they write about.

The statement also acknowledges the potential for unconscious bias and welcomes suggested revisions to address any concerns.

Including this statement at the beginning of the book leads by example, immediately setting a tone of empathy and creating space for the reader to continue in that vein.

The use of annotation software, such as Hypothesis, alongside readings, empowers learners to express their opinions, encounter differing opinions of fellow learners, and practice empathy through this interactive experience.
